sustainable infrastructure for local talent

A shared management commons for independent researchers

Imagining the future of research

We envision a thriving independent research and learning ecosystem outside of, alongside, and in between universities and corporations. As researchers exit traditional systems and pursue independent financing, they require basic legal and financial support. But the university and corporations that previously housed them offered more than just legal and financial infrastructure; they also offered meaningful social infrastructure. We ask: what will institutions look like in the future? What alternative structures can we build today?

Collective infrastructure for values-aligned innovation and pedagogy

At SILT, independent researchers, teachers, and innovators contribute to and benefit from a shared operational commons. This distributed, operational home for independent teaching and learning stewards shared legal, financial, and IT infrastructure. Members benefit from reduced costs, confidentiality, and a network of aligned practitioners.

You don’t have to go it alone.

An independent non-profit may not be a sustainable or viable option for every funded research project. SILT can incubate projects or hold them until they need to close. Growth, sunsetting, spin-offs, and mergers of projects are all practiced possibilities.

Members participate in the development and stewardship of infrastructure that affects their operations in collaboration with our core staff and board of directors.

Accountability & integrity

We believe our commitments show up in what we choose to research, teach, or build, and in how we go about it. We intentionally enter into a practice of commoning to rehearse relating to each other and building otherwise.
